An area comparable in size to six football pitches and a total investment of over 250 million euros to improve the operational efficiency and travel experience for passengers. After four years, the works designed and realized by ADR Infrastrutture and ADR Ingegneria to upgrade and regenerate Terminal 3 in compliance with the highest standards of safety and technological innovation were inaugurated at Leonardo da Vinci airport.
The regeneration was preceded by the complete restyling of the façade to restore its original architectural strengths, such as visual permeability and natural light. It involved more than 25 Italian companies and covered numerous strategic areas. Specifically, 150 new check-in counters were added, the number of luggage belts was increased and the security control area for sensitive flights was upgraded. In addition, the building structure was reinforced in terms of earthquake resistance and the fire-fighting systems were modernized, with over 3,100 detectors, 88 smoke extractors and 15 new air handling units.
The work carried out has increased Terminal 3’s capacity for arriving passengers by 30%, ensuring the full operation of the area for the Summer 2025 season. The regeneration and upgrading work is the most recent stage in a process of enhancement and growth that has projected Fiumicino airport into the world elite. At the beginning of April, Leonardo da Vinci airport entered for the first time the Skytrax’s Top 10 Best Airports in the World (ranking 8th and climbing 4 positions compared to 2024), and it also re-obtained Skytrax’s 5-Star Rating, the highest recognition in the airport sector worldwide.
