Promoted by Roma Capitale, Department of Culture - Capitoline Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, the exhibition of the large painting “Tappezzamento a pezzi” in the spectacular Ballroom of the Casino Nobile in Villa Torlonia is the result of a joint project with the ICR - Istituto Centrale per il Restauro and the Paola Droghetti Onlus Foundation, which financed its restoration.
Created in 1993 and composed of seven elements, each different from the other in terms of the pictorial treatment of the wooden surface and irregular shapes, the work is one of the masterpieces of Renato Mambor, one of the most interesting and complex figures in contemporary art of the late 20th century. It marks the artist’s return to painting, after the years devoted to theater between 1975 and the end of the 1980s. The work has been part of the collections of contemporary art of the Capitoline Superintendence since 1999, when it was acquired following Mambor’s participation in the seventh edition of the “Lavori In Corso” exhibition.
In addition to providing useful insight into the painting technique used, the recently completed conservation restoration has made it possible to reflect on the methods of installation, thanks also to the testimony provided by the artist’s archive, in particular by his wife Patrizia Speciale. The exhibition has therefore reconstructed the original installation design, based on the compositional scheme left by the artist when the work entered the Capitoline collections.
