Born in Edinburgh in 1942 but living in New York since the 1970s, Robert Watson is considered one of the world’s most successful and prolific photographers of our time, creator of iconic images that blend art, fashion and commercial photography, as well as memorable portraits of Alfred Hitchcock, Steve Jobs and Kate Moss.
In this major exhibition, conceived by Studio F.P. and promoted by the Department of Culture of Roma Capitale and Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, his photographic gaze focuses on Rome, challenging the conventional depictions of the Eternal City. For over two years, Albert Watson wandered through Rome without a predetermined itinerary. Fueled by the city’s pulse and capturing its essence in the faces, architectural landmarks and movements, the photographer has grasped its most authentic spirit. The result is a portrait of contemporary Rome, suspended between the weight of its history and the energy and avant-garde of the present.
The 200 black-and-white and color photographs, often large-format, displayed in the halls of Palazzo Esposizioni Roma are arranged on the basis of an instinctive rather than a thematic rationale. Intimate and spontaneous moments of humanity sit side by side with the imposing architecture and history of the city, symbolic places such as the Colosseum and other less conventional ones such as Cinecittà Studios, landscapes and interiors, in a game of echoes between Rome and the people who live in it and define it – anonymous faces or celebrities such as Paolo Sorrentino, Valeria Golino, Luca Zingaretti, Roberto Bolle or Cardinal Silvano Maria Tomasi. Taken as a whole, A Rome Codex offers a visual compass that is at once instinctive and meticulous, to decipher a city rich in contrasts and constantly evolving.
