The Teatro Sistina hosts one of the best-loved musicals in the history of musical theatre, which returns on stage in the version adapted for Italian audiences, signed by director Massimo Romeo Piparo.
Inspired by William Shakespeare's splendid play Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is a timeless masterpiece, born from the genius of Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins and debuted on Broadway in September 1957, kicking off an incredible success, followed by two award-winning film adaptations: in 1961, directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, and in 2021, directed by Steven Spielberg.
An exciting narration set against the backdrop of 1950s New York, it tells the story of the complicated and thwarted love between Tony, a former member of a gang, and Maria, sister of the leader of the other, and the tensions between two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.
On stage, choreographed by Billy Mitchell, are more than thirty extraordinary artists - including Luca Gaudiano and Natalia Scarpolini - accompanied by the colourful atmospheres of the 1950s and the notes of Bernstein's unforgettable melodies, such as Maria, America, Somewhere e Tonight, played by the 18-piece live orchestra conducted by Maestro Emanuele Friello.
