The thrilling musical, one of the most famous and loved in the world, arrives on stage at the majestic Baths of Caracalla as part of the Caracalla Festival 2025 - Tra Sacro e Umano (Between the Sacred and the Human), the summer season of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
The idea of the new production of the Capitoline opera house, signed by Damiano Michieletto, creator of the playbill of the prestigious festival, was born in 2022, the year of his staging of Leonard Bernstein's Mass.
The musical, based on an idea by Jerome Robbins, was composed in the 1950s by the American musician to a libretto by Arthur Laurents with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and is an exciting narration that focuses on the story's nuances of the human soul between impulsiveness, irrationality, emotions, and the conflict between the dream of inclusion and the stark reality of everyday life.
On stage, with choreographies by Sasha Riva and Simone Repele, is an international cast of artists - Marek Zurowksi (Tony), Sofia Caselli (Maria), Sam Brown (Riff), Sergio Giacomelli (Bernardo), Natascia Fonzetti (Anita) - who, with sets by Paolo Fantin, costumes by Carla Teti and lighting design by Alessandro Carletti, give life to a timeless masterpiece to unforgettable melodies performed by the Orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted by Michele Mariotti.
