A rich program for the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, which, with S|CONFINAMENTI, the 2023-24 season, returns with the magic of opera, ballet and great music on the stage of the historical Costanzi Theatre.
The program sees the debut of international directors, famous choreographers, great conductors and opera stars for 10 new productions, 11 operas, 7 ballets and 5 concerts.
OPERA
Starting on 27 November with Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele from Goethe's Faust conducted by Michele Mariotti, directed by Simon Stone and the soprano Maria Agresta among the performers, co-produced with the Teatro Real in Madrid. Then, from 9 to 14 December, is on stage Tosca, Giacomo Puccini's most dramatic work, in the original staging of the first performance, conducted by Maestro Michele Mariotti. From 13 to 21 January, Damiano Michieletto presents for the first time in Rome his Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) by Mozart. From 7 to 16 February, Michele Mariotti will take the podium for the second part of the three-year project Trittico ricomposto with Gianni Schicchi and L'heure espagnole, flanked by Ersan Mondtag in his directing debut in Italy.
A great comeback for the Australian director Barrie Kosky who, from 7 to 16 March, will direct Richard Strauss' Salome based on Oscar Wilde, with the musical conduction of Marc Albrecht and the performance of the charismatic Sara Jakubiak. New production for Bellini's Sonnambula under the direction of Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil (Le Lab), with the baton of Francesco Lanzillotta and the famous soprano Lisette Oropesa. From 2 to 9 May, the German director Claus Guth will make his debut at the Costanzi together with Juraj Valčuha, with Jenůfa by Leoš Janáček, which includes in the cast the Finnish bel canto star Karita Mattila. From 28 to 31 May, space for the talents of "Fabbrica", the Young Artist Program of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, who present Pauline Viardot's Cinderella, proposed in the Italian version at the Teatro Nazionale.
From 1 to 12 June, the Italian première for Verdi's Othello in a production by the Monte-Carlo Opéra and the Tbilisi National Opera, signed by Allex Aguilera, directed by Daniel Oren with international opera stars - Gregory Kunde, Roberta Mantegna and Igor Golovatenko. After 62 years, the Capitoline theatre welcomes back Peter Grimes, Benjamin Britten's masterpiece directed by Deborah Warner and conducted by Michele Mariotti, on stage from 11 to 19 October. The opera season ends with L'ultimo viaggio di Sindbad, a commission from the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma to the composer Silvia Colasanti based on a text by Erri de Luca, premiered from 16 to 23 October 2024 at the Teatro Nazionale, in collaboration with Romaeuropa Festival.
BALLET
The new ballet season begins on 21 December with Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker in Paul Chalmer's vision in a new staging designed by Andrea Miglio for the set and by Gianluca Falaschi for the costumes, with musical direction by Nir Kabaretti. At the beginning of 2024, the spotlight will be on new talents in choreography: from 31 January to 2 February, the Teatro Nazionale hosts Yellow by Adriano Bolognino and I died for love by Simone Repele and Sasha Riva. Three evenings are dedicated to Benjamin Millepied with music by Philip Glass, hosted at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, staged as part of the Equilibrio 2024 festival: Closer, a duet between a man and a woman, and On the other side, the third chapter of the Gems trilogy, a reinterpretation of Balanchine's Diamonds, redesigned for the dancers of the Rome Opera House.
From 23 to 29 March, the Dance triptych returns with Playlist (Track 1, 2), created by William Forsythe for the English National Ballet in 2018 on the rhythms of new-soul and house music, Windgames by Patrick de Bana, realized in 2013 for the Wiener Staatsballett on Opus 35 by Tchaikovsky, and Women by Juliano Nunes on music by the Danish pianist and composer Alexander Mackenzie. From 19 to 27 June, it's the turn of a great classic: Swan Lake by Beniamin Pech, danced by Fumi Kaneko, in her debut at the Costanzi, and Vadim Muntagirov, with musical conduction by Koen Kessels. From 14 to 22 September, Kevin Rhodes conducts Tchaikovsky's masterpiece The Sleeping Beauty, with the return of the extraordinary Marianela Núñez and the stage debut at the Costanzi of Reece Clarke, Principal of the Royal Ballet of London. Stendhal's famous novel, Il rosso e il nero, is the new staging of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma created by Uwe Scholz on Hector Berlioz's music collage, conducted by Martin Georgiev, on stage from 26 October to 2 November.
CONCERTS
On the schedule are five appointments with great symphonic music and the most prestigious batons starting from 29 January with the extraordinary concert by Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in music by Lyadov, Stravinsky and Strauss. On 10 February, Omer Meir Wellber conducts Proximity or Closeness, a choreography by Ermanno Sbezzo danced by Eleonora Abbagnato and Jacopo Tissi to music by Mahler and Schnittke, followed by Mozart's Requiem with the voices of Hila Baggio José Maria Lo Monaco, Luís Gomes, Giorgi Manoshvili. Maestro Michele Mariotti will be on the podium on 20 February for Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with Stravinsky's ballet Pulcinella and on 14 May for Prokof'ev's cantata Aleksandr Nevsky with the screening of Ėjzenštejn's film and the Symphony No. 4 by Tchaikovsky. On 15 March, Roberto Abbado conducts the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Orchestra for the world premiere of the new version of Bandiere nere by Fabio Vacchi, the overture from Beethoven's Egmont and the Symphony No. 1 by Shostakovich.
