Take a picture with the Colosseum, the world's most iconic monument, in the background? Done! Heelflips, airwalks, board slides, and other stunning acrobatics are possible today thanks to the most Instagram-worthy skatepark ever, which also makes inroads overseas and makes Rome the top destination for practicing this popular sport.
"Skatepark With Colosseum View Gives Rome a Modern Tourist Attraction." is the headline of the New York Times article by Elisabetta Povoledo, a reporter for the prestigious US newspaper.
A modern tourist attraction but also a unique meeting place where skaters and freestylers from all over the world can have fun and spend a few carefree hours practicing to perhaps dream of the next Olympics.
It was right here, on the Colle Oppio Park, that the World Skate, the governing body of all skating wheel sports, organized the first stage of the Olympic qualifiers for Paris 2024 last year, in which over 250 international athletes took part.
The new skatepark is just the first step in a larger project that sees the construction of a large playground that will include a small soccer field, a volleyball pitch, fitness machines, and an area with checkers and a chessboard.
