Mathematical Dialogues

The sixth edition of the Mathematical Dialogues in the Sala Petrassi of the New Auditorium Parco della Musica, this year has as its central theme the need to face and "accept" the uncertainty that seems to dominate our times, thanks to a scientific approach guided by the logical-mathematician method and to the disciplines of physics and statistics. In fact, science can help us understand how to calculate the consequences on the community of each of our individual actions, even in globalized and technologically advanced societies like ours. Conceived and produced by the publishing company il Mulino, in collaboration with The Musica per Roma Foundation, the exhibition sees the participation of important mathematicians, physicists and statisticians who lead us towards a better understanding of the world in which we live and what we are building for our future.

This year, among the scholars participating in the event, of particular importance are the two scientists and popularizers Antonietta Mira and Silvia Bencivelli who ask themselves the critical question More is always different?: in a journey back in time, we try to understand when more data - big data - makes a difference. Hykel Hosni, on the other hand, with Democracy is a necessary evil, illustrates that democracy is a different concept from "what the majority thinks" and that realizing a coherent and convincing electoral system is mathematically impossible; the review ends with Domenico Piccolo, professor emeritus of Statistics at the Federico II University of Naples and one of the promoters of the development and evolution of this discipline in our country, who offers us a meeting entitled Uncertainty: added value for knowledge and praxis, an interesting reflection on the crisis that today is going through the trust in science.
