Rome is increasingly the Capital of Tourism and adds a new record to its already impressive list of achievements, demonstrating that its strategy of hosting major cultural, sporting, musical and fashion events, combined with the quality of tourism offerings in a city that is unique in the world for its history, culture and services, works extremely well all year round.
Every year, millions of tourists arrive in Rome, generating €13.3 billion in revenue for the Capital in 2024 alone. In 2022, for example, the total was €8.5 billion, as shown by data from Il Sole 24 Ore's sociometric research La ricchezza dei comuni turistici (The wealth of tourist municipalities).
In 2024, Rome will therefore be the leading Italian municipality in terms of added value generated by tourism. Milan is far behind with only £4.7 billion (up from £3.6 billion in 2022), followed by Venice with £3.4 billion (up from £3 billion), Florence with £3 billion (up from £2.5 billion), Rimini and Naples with around £1.5 billion each (unchanged from 2023). The podium remains unchanged from the last survey.
The research confirms Rome's relentless and steady growth as a tourist destination of choice and certifies that tourism is an added value for Rome, not only because of the obvious economic benefits, but also because it continues to generate more and more jobs, with over 100,000 people employed in the sector.
