The Festival des Cabanes returns to the splendid gardens of Villa Medici: the festival that transforms the historic gardens of the French Academy in Rome into a laboratory for architectural experimentation and practice.
The event, now in its fourth edition in 2025, includes a route with five huts that can be visited in the gardens, a new bookshop and a multidisciplinary artistic programme. The five cabanes are original architectural installations designed and created by international studios and collectives, five teams with different practices and backgrounds: Associates Architecture, Atelier MARE, Campo & Diploma 20 Architectural Association with the artist Roger Ballen, Huttopia and MBL. Made of wood, steel, bricks or recycled materials, the huts fit into the squares of the historic garden, grassy rectangles dotted with centuries-old pine trees and bordered by hedges of laurel, boxwood, holm oak and myrtle. The idea of the hut, which is at the heart of the festival, represents a dialogue between architects, artists, designers and craftsmen on some fundamental issues, such as the use of non-invasive and ecological architectural forms or housing solutions for a sustainable future.
The festival is enriched with cultural events, exhibitions, performances and meetings so as to stimulate a dialogue between landscape, art and contemporary construction.
