On Friday 9 May at 2 p.m., the Tor Fiscale-Acquedotti Itinerary will be presented and inaugurated at the Laghetto area of the Parco degli Acquedotti. The itinerary is part of the Unexpected Itineraries of Rome project aimed at enhancing and promoting places, archaeological-historical sites and monuments that are not generally included in traditional tourist routes.
The itinerary (about 4 kilometer long and easily accessible by public transport) can be covered on foot or by bicycle. The route starts from the Casale Museo at the entrance to Via dell’Acquedotto Felice (where there is an information point) and winds through the Parco di Tor Fiscale and the Parco degli Acquedotti (both part of the Appia Antica Park) to end in the area of the Villa delle Vignacce, near Via Lemonia. The itinerary can also be travelled in the opposite direction. There are two other entrances, from Via Lemonia and from Via Appio Claudio.
A perfect synthesis of history and nature, the two parks preserve historical-archaeological testimonies of inestimable value, such as the medieval Torre del Fiscale (12th-13th century) and the remains of the Aqua Claudia and six other aqueducts, extraordinary masterpieces of water engineering. Other points of interest include the eighteenth-century Fountain of Pope Benedict XVI, embedded in the Acqua Felice (built during the pontificate of Pope Sixtus V), the Casale Roma Vecchia, originally a tower-house in a strategic position between the Aqua Claudia and Marcia, and the remains of the Villa delle Vignacce, a vast villa from ancient Rome with continuity of use from the first century B.C. to late antiquity. The journey through time ends in the present day with the murals of the Quadraro district, a short distance from the parks: works of street art that combine past and present, social denunciation, historical memory and contemporary artistic languages.
The green paths winding along the route convey peace and serenity, involving all the senses amidst the chirping of birds, the flowing water and the scents of the Mediterranean maquis and the countless botanical species present – cypresses, olive trees, lindens, willows, mulberries and the ever-present pines, to name but a few.
