On the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of the deportees to the Auschwitz extermination camp - January 27, 1945 - from January 21 to 31 Rome celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the Shoah, that is, the extermination of the Jewish people as well as the persecution, imprisonment and death in the Nazi concentration camps of Sinti and Roma, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, soldiers and opponents of Nazi-fascism from all over Europe with a calendar of 40 initiatives promoted by the Department of Culture, as part of the project Memoria genera Futuro (Memory generates Future). The Day of Remembrance is celebrated in many countries, not only in Europe, but also outside. In the Capital, the Holocaust Remembrance Day is commemorated with exhibitions, meetings, ceremonies, moments of recollection of the facts and reflection - the latter especially in schools of all levels - on what happened in the Nazi concentration camps, in order to keep alive the memory of that tragic period in the history of Europe and of our country, so that the values of equality, justice, freedom, respect for life and human dignity at the basis of civil coexistence are in the foreground and the repetition of similar tragedies is averted forever.
The initiative is made possible thanks to the commitment of the main city institutions, local and national associations and the many scholars, writers and artists who participate for the occasion.
