Conversation Piece is an annual exhibition cycle organized by Fondazione Memmo to narrate the city’s art scene, particularly as regards the activities of foreign academies and cultural institutes, and to provide an overview of Italian and foreign artists who have chosen Rome as their place of residence, activity and work. Over the years, more than fifty artists from all over the world were involved in the various editions.
For this tenth edition, as usual, the artists have been asked to address a theme with a universal resonance, but that is also closely associated with the city of Rome and its thousands of years of history. The title of this year’s exhibition comes from the gentle breeze or “still small voice” which precedes the biblical prophet Elijah’s encounter with God. It refers to the creation of man, formed from “the dust of the ground” and then animated by the divine breath, to Greek mythology and philosophy but also to the Ponentino, that light summer wind blowing from the sea to the west which is a typically Roman meteorological phenomenon.
Through a succession of site-specific works, some of them exhibited in Rome for the first time, the exhibition employs the metaphor of air or wind, considering it in all of its most varied aspects. These may include the breath of life, the presence of a spirit in living beings and inanimate things, as well as the possible manifestations of the soul and the divine. For this new edition, the following artists have been invited: Bianca Bondi; Enzo Cucchi exhibiting a collective artwork created together with Andrea Anastasio, Francesco Arena, Marc Bauer, Elisabetta Benassi, Carlo Benvenuto and Domenico Mangano; Sidival Fila, Vanessa Garwood and Richard Mosse.
