Myung-Whun Chung returns on January 16 (with repeats on January 17 and 18) to the all’Auditorium Parco della Musica - of which the South Korean maestro was music director from 1997 to 2005 - to conduct the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Gioacchino Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished”.
The Stabat Mater is a liturgical sequence in music for soloists, choir and orchestra written by Rossini between 1831 and 1841. The first performance was held in Paris in 1842. The work, which is divided into ten sections, appears rich in harmonic structure, very coherent and unitary and is also dominated by a balanced and classical conception of musical form. Some of the pieces in fact, are as if "framed" by the same musical period, which appears only as an introduction and as a final gloss of each of them.
The Symphony No. 8 in B minor D 759, commonly called Unfinished, written by Schubert in 1822, is one of the most famous compositions of the great Austrian musician. The Symphony is characterized by an unusual tonality for a symphony of the classical period and for this reason it represents the transition to Romanticism in music: the composition is in fact defined the "first romantic symphony". The completed part of the symphony is divided into two movements - Allegro moderato, Andante con moto - the third in fact - Scherzo. Allegro and Trio - was never finished
Myung-Whun Chung's long and extraordinary musical career is marked by his appointment as Director Emeritus - the first ever - of the Filarmonica della Scala in Milan since 2023. He has also been awarded numerous prizes and recognitions.
