Apertura Porta Santa di Santa Maria Maggiore

The Holy Door of St Mary Major was opened by the Pope on 1 January 2025. The Basilica, built at the behest of Pope Liberius on the site where a miraculous snowfall occurred in August 358, houses the relics of the Holy Cradle and is therefore also known as Sancta Maria ad Praesepem. A masterpiece of medieval art is the nativity scene by Arnolfo di Cambio, one of the oldest artistic representations of the Nativity.
