Picasso lo straniero

Palazzo Cipolla hosts an exhibition dedicated to the great 20th-century artist and his artistic and political path, deepening how he shaped his identity as a foreigner in France.  

Organised by the Fondazione Roma with Marsilio Arte and curated by Annie Cohen-Solal, the exhibition explores from an original and daring perspective how Picasso, overcoming the obstacles of being an immigrant, transformed the artistic scenario with his revolutionary aesthetic vision. Brilliant, controversial and charismatic, the Spanish artist settled in Paris in 1904, becoming the leader of the Cubist avant-garde. He lived In France - where he created the famous painting Guernica in 1937 - until his death, although he never obtained citizenship, which was refused in 1940.

Based on an original idea of the curator, with the intervention of Johan Popelard of the Musée national Picasso-Paris, the exhibition path - including a section on the Roman Spring of 1917, shared by Picasso with Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Serge de Diaghilev and Leonid Massine - winds through more than 100 works, accompanied by documents, photographs, letters and videos, as well as a selection of unseen works, chosen by Annie Cohen-Solal especially for Palazzo Cipolla. 

The works displayed come from important museums - Musée national Picasso-Paris, main lender, Palais de la Porte Dorée, Museu Picasso Barcelona, Musée Picasso in Antibes, Musée Magnelli - Musée de la céramique in Vallauris - and from historical and valuable European private collections.
