Viaggio in Italia XXI – Lo sguardo sull’altro-Foto: sito ufficiale della Casa - Museo di Goethe

The exhibition at the Goethe House-Museum Journey to Italy XXI - The gaze on the other, curated by Ludovico Pratesi, is an investigation into the present of travels in Italy, so markedly changed in all respects compared to the Grand Tour of Goethe's times, and presents the works of eight artists belonging to different generations, united by the work between Italy and Germany: Francesco Arena, Guido Casaretto, Johanna Diehl, Esra Ersen, Silvia Giambrone, Benedikt Hipp, Christian Jankowski, Alessandro Piangiamore.

The main theme of the exhibition is the relationship with the other, a crucial theme in a Europe that is going through a very complex historical period, with the issue of migrants, gender diversity, climate change, minority rights or limitations, of freedom due to pandemics. Through 34 works, the artists on display tell their points of view, interpreting this theme in a different way through expressive languages ranging from video to painting, from sculpture to photography.

Francesco Arena and Silvia Giambrone, for example, express themselves through the written word: the first presents a series of landscapes told through writing, composed of minimal messages engraved on a bronze work similar to a clay stick; Silvia Giambrone, on the other hand, proposes a work where the word becomes a message, in which she denounces violence against women and femicide, which are increasingly frequent in our country. The artist Guido Casaretto instead offers a reinterpretation of the theme of the mask and disguise, reworking Sardinian masks on a Turkish lake. Esra Ersen investigates the dimension of migration through the perspective of immigrants who have to enter Italian society, Christian Jankoswki and Alessandro Piangiamore finally show a more spiritual and ironic reading of the proposed theme: Jankoswki with the creation of a fake film casting to unmask the Vatican show business, while Piangiamore adopts a spiritual vision with a diptych representing a journey to heaven.
