The Merry Widow (original title Die lustige Witwe), one of the most beloved and most performed operettas in the world, masterfully set to music by the Hungarian composer Franz Lehár (1870 - 1948), is on stage at the Ghione Theater, directed by Flavio Trevisan.
First performed at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna in 1905 to great acclaim, and in Italy in Milan in 1907, the play is set in Paris, at the Pontevedre Embassy, and features Hanna Glavary, widow of the wealthy court banker. The Pontevedre ambassador, Baron Zeta, is ordered to arrange a marriage between Hanna and a compatriot to ensure that the wealthy widow's dowry remains in the state coffers. Baron Zeta, aided by his somewhat bungling secretary Njegus, attempts to resolve the situation, however, triggering a series of enthralling comic misunderstandings that nevertheless, but inevitably, lead to a happy ending.
