The concert on October 3, 2025, at the Palladium Theater, as part of the Musica Sacra Festival 2025, an initiative of the Lazio Region, will feature excerpts from Joseph Haydn's Seven Words of Christ on the Cross, Alessandro Sobiati's Dona nobis pacem for soprano and string quartet, and Leoš Janáček's Quartetto n.1 Kreutzer Sonata.
These are different pieces from very distant periods: the sacred composition the Seven Words of Christ on the Cross, commissioned in 1786 and originally written in 1787 for orchestra, was later reworked by Haydn in 1796 as an oratorio for soloists, choir, and orchestra. It consists of seven slow movements - ranging from Largo to Adagio - lasting about ten minutes each, to which the composer added an introduction and a finale with a much more lively tempo, contrasting with the preceding movements.
Janáček's Quartet No. 1, known as the Kreutzer Sonata, composed in a short period of time in the autumn of 1923 and first performed in 1924, draws inspiration from Leo Tolstoy's famous novel. The quartet is presented in four movements, yet it eschews classical form, with numerous small, contrasting fragments recurring throughout each movement.
Dona nobis pacem for soprano and string quartet is instead a contemporary sacred composition by Sobiati, a pianist and composer who has won numerous national and international competitions.
