On the stage of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma is staged The Turn of the Screw, Benjamin Britten's masterpiece, in a new production by British director Deborah Warner.
Based on the late 19th-century Henry James novel of the same name, the opera, in a prologue, two acts and sixteen scenes, was composed by the great English composer and conductor in 1954, to a libretto by Myfanwy Piper, and premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in September of the same year.
Set in an old villa in the English countryside, The Turn of the Screw tells the story of a young governess who agrees to care for two orphaned children, surrounded by mysterious presences and ghosts, on the condition that she will not contact their guardian for any reason. In a crescendo of mystery and tension, the epilogue leads to a tragic ending.
On stage is an extraordinary cast, such as the renowned tenor Ian Bostridge, sopranos Anna Prohaska and Emma Bell, mezzo-soprano Christine Rice and the talented Zandy Hull and Cecily Balmforth, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted by Henrik Nánási, with sets by Justin Nardella, costumes by Luca Costigliolo, choreography by Joanna O'Keefee and lighting by Jean Kalman.
