Passionate, moving, dramatic: the two-act ballet inspired by Prosper Merimée's novel of the same name returns to the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in the version signed by Czech choreographer Jiří Bubeníček, which, in 2019, won the EuropainDanza Best Choreographic production of the Year Award.
In a union of classical and contemporary, Carmen is an unmissable and modern masterpiece on pointe that depicts the story of the sensual gypsy cigar maker with an independent and proud character, a symbol of strength and emancipation. Desired by all men, the beautiful Carmen will, however, lose her life at the hands of Don José, who cannot accept her rejection.
Returning to its literary origins, focusing on Merimée's narration, Bubeníček's interpretation is innovative with new features about characters and also music, with the inclusion of flamenco pieces performed live.
On stage, with splendid costumes by Anna Biagiotti, is the extraordinary Corps de Ballet of the Costanzi Theatre - including the étoiles Rebecca Bianchi, Susanna Salvi and Alessio Rezza - with Javier Rojas of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, guest artist at his debut at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, accompanied by George Bizet's music and pieces by Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Gabriele Bonolis, performed by the Teatro dell'Opera Orchestra, conducted by Manuel Coves.
