Easter in Rome 2024: the ultimate guide

Colosseo incorniciato da rami di ciliegio

Easter in Rome: what to do in and around Rome on Easter holidays, among religious traditions, open museums, unusual and fun parks and activities, and great food.

For over two thousand years, Rome has embraced us with its warmth and timeless beauty. Throughout the centuries, Easter has drawn crowds of tourists and pilgrims, poets and writers, the faithful and the curious to the Eternal City. It was the Christian feast par excellence, accompanied by rituals and customs partly handed down to the present day.

Today, the Easter festivities are one of the best times to explore Rome, get lost in its alleyways, stop to admire its monuments and discover unique perspectives.

Check here the programme of Roma Live events from 28 March to 1 April.

LITURGICAL RITES AND RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS OF EASTER

The Via Crucis at the Colosseum - 29 March
The first Via Crucis at the Colosseum was celebrated on Good Friday in 1750: still today, the re-enactment of the Passion of Christ, presided over by the Holy Father against the backdrop of Rome's symbolic monument, continues to be one of the most evocative and popular religious rites. To allow the Via Crucis to take place, on 29 March the archaeological areas of the Flavian Amphitheatre (Colosseum), the Palatine Forum, the Roman Forum (including the Ceasar's Forum) and the Imperial Fora will be closed to the public from 12 noon.

Easter Vigil - 30 March
In the liturgy of the Church, the Easter Vigil is held after sunset on Holy Saturday and before dawn on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In St Peter's Basilica, the Pontiff presides at the Vigil at 7.30 p.m. but in every church in the city, at different times, you can attend this solemn mass.

Easter Sunday Mass and Papal Blessing - 31 March
On 31 March, at 10 a.m., the Holy Father celebrates Easter Sunday Mass in the main square of the Vatican, followed at 12 noon by the 'Urbi et Orbi' blessing that closes the 2024 Holy Week.

For details on how to access the celebrations inside the Vatican, see the official website

Visiting the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome - between 28 and 30 March
The Giro delle Sette Chiese ("Tour of the Seven Churches") is the city's most famous pilgrimage. It dates back to the Middle Ages, but was revived by St Filippo Neri in 1572. One of the seasons when it is still traditionally practised today is between the evening of Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday. The circular route touches what were the main churches of the city in the 16th century: St Peter's Basilica, St Paul's Outside the Walls, Basilica of San Sebastiano (since the Jubilee of 2000, also replaced by the Shrine of the Madonna del Divino Amore), San Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, San Lorenzo outside the Walls, and Santa Maria Maggiore.

EASTER ON THE TABLE

As on every great occasion, the Easter table is set to the brim, a prelude to a gluttonous and abundant meal. Lots of sweet and savoury dishes, to be enjoyed by letting yourself be carried away by the flavours and aromas of Rome's gastronomic tradition made up of popular and authentic recipes, made with simple and easy-to-find products. After the fasting and moderation that characterised the Lenten period, traditional sweets, eggs, boiled and chocolate, and lamb meat, the Christian symbol of rebirth, arrive on our tables.

  • The Easter breakfast - The absolute stars of the Easter breakfast are hard-boiled eggs, often decorated, to be eaten with the Roman coral, a dark red salami, the soft 'pizza sbattuta', a cake reminiscent of sponge cake, which goes well with the delicious chocolate eggs so loved by children.
  • Easter lunch - After a hearty breakfast, one certainly cannot refuse a hearty lunch that puts on the table tasty dishes such as omelette with artichokes, the main vegetable of Roman cuisine, present in an unavoidable dish on the tables of the faithful of tradition: coratella with artichokes, made with the innards of the lamb. At the end of the meal, you cannot miss the sweet-symbol of Easter, the delicious colomba, covered with crunchy almonds, icing and sugar crystals.
  • The Abbacchio a scottadito - One of the tastiest dishes of Roman cuisine, the Abbacchio a scottadito (grilled lamb) is the dish of the festivities and the spring season, according to the tradition of Rome and Latium; an unfailing dish on Roman tables, especially at Easter lunch, perfect when accompanied by an excellent red wine from the Castelli.
  • Ricotta and sour cherry tart - Among the dishes linked to a strong family tradition, handed down orally over the centuries, the ricotta and sour cherry tart is a great classic of Romanesque-Jewish cuisine: a mouth-watering shortcrust pastry, with sour cherry jam and sambuca-flavoured ricotta cream.
  • Ciambelline al vino - Of very ancient origin, ciambelline al vino are a typical preparation of the Castelli Romani: biscuits strongly linked to popular tradition, with homemade but intense flavours, made with the ingredients usually found in every home. Flour, olive oil, wine and sugar give life to a preparation with a heavenly taste and an inviting amber or brown colour, covered with sweet sugar crystals.
  • Wine and drinking culture in Rome - The fil rouge that runs through the history of Rome's gastronomic tradition is, of course, wine, the protagonist of every table and extraordinary accompaniment, in its different declinations - white, red and rosé - to dishes and courses of all kinds.

EASTER AND EASTER MONDAY 2024: THE EDITORS' SUGGESTIONS

It is said that a city can be described through a single panorama, a colour, a perfume, and it is precisely those nuances, imperceptible and evanescent, that often turn into indelible memories. The magic of Rome, then, has been endlessly recounted in the words of poets and writers and wonderfully depicted in the works of great artists. Eternal and mysterious, Rome embraces you with its millennial charm and surprising modernity. There is no better time than the Easter holidays, laden with the colours and perfumes of spring, to fully immerse yourself in its vibrant mornings, warm sunsets and enchanted nights.

Here are our suggestions and visit tips for an unforgettable Easter:

  1. Stroll through Rome's characteristic alleys and iconic squares to discover unprecedented perspectives, breathtaking views and hidden corners all to be experienced and told.
  2. Open also on Easter Sunday, the historic Porta Portese Market is located in the characteristic Rione Trastevere and is the city's most famous and largest: a real Sunday ritual for Romans and one of the must-see stops if you are visiting Rome.
  3. Small is beautiful, nay, wonderful. We propose you an itinerary to discover seven 'extra-small' architectural masterpieces. Decidedly smaller in size compared to the grandeur of the Pantheon or the Colosseum, but no less fascinating for that, they are works that shine in their own light and emanate infinite suggestions.
  4. Visit the Casa delle Farfalle (Butterfly House), a magical and immersive place where you can have a unique and exciting experience in direct contact with some of the world's most beautiful exotic butterflies. The large tropical greenhouse is home to over thirty species of butterflies that flutter, lay eggs, feed and court each other in a magical dance.
  5. Wandering around the ancient ruins of the city and wandering through its characteristic alleys is certainly an unforgettable experience. Rome, however, must also be admired from above: the city's exciting panoramic viewpoints offer you the unmissable opportunity to enjoy a splendid view and grasp all its magnificence from a privileged perspective, to play at spotting the most famous monuments, be moved by Roman sunsets, and embrace the entire historic centre and beyond in a single glance.
  6. Enjoy the excellent food and wine specialities of Roman cuisine in the restaurants of the historic centre, in the characteristic trattorias and osterias of Rome's rioni, in the fraschette of the Castelli Romani or by the sea.
  7. Experience the exciting Rome's nightlife. In Rome, the night comes on very late: after a classic aperitif in the trendy lounge bars scattered around the city, a hearty dinner in one of the many typical restaurants and a stroll through the splendid historical piazzas or around the millenary monuments, it is time to throw yourself into its movida. During the week, and especially at weekends and on holidays, the city is constantly animated by a lively nightlife, to suit all tastes and budgets. And, as the saying goes 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do', to end the night in the most traditional way, be sure to take a bite, at the crack of dawn, of a tasty croissant or a freshly baked cream doughnut!
