CSIO di Roma Piazza di Siena 2024 - edizione 91

CSIO di Roma Piazza di Siena 2024 - edizione 91

From 22 to 26 May, the historic equestrian circuit immersed in the greenery of Villa Borghese hosts the CSIO of Rome and renews an unbreakable bond.

The world's best horses and riders at Piazza di Siena

A unique place in the world, Piazza di Siena saw the debut of the prestigious competition in 1922. In 1926, the FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) included the Roman competition in the international calendar. It is from that moment that the official numbering of the Concorso Ippico Internazionale di Roma (CSIO, Concours Saut International Officiel) began and it is now in its 91st edition.

After two editions hosted at the Villa Glori racecourse and one at the Parioli one, in 1929, the horse competition returned to Piazza di Siena with four competing teams: France, Poland, Spain and Italy. Captain Sandro Bettoni triumphed in that edition.

Amidst buildings, sculptures, monuments and fountains, works by great artists of Baroque, neoclassical and eclectic art, centuries-old trees, ponds, Italian gardens and vast open spaces, events unique to Italian horseracing took place, unforgettable challenges between the likes of the d'Inzeo brothers and Graziano Mancinelli, who, along with many other standard bearers of this noble sport, competed on the ground of this magnificent course.

The horse competition was only interrupted from 1941 to 1946, due to World War II, and in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the long history of an inseparable bond, only two editions were not hosted by Piazza di Siena: in 1960, when it became the stage for the individual event of the Rome Olympic Games and was moved to Turin, and in 1998, when it gave way to the World Equestrian Games.

In 2000, Piazza di Siena saw the world's best horses and riders in the field twice: in May, for the traditional Spring CSIO, and in October, with a special edition that was the final of the Samsung FEI Nations Cup circuit.

History, prestige and a staggering prize fund

With a total prize money of more than one million euro, it is one of the testing grounds on which the greatest attention of technicians and riders is focused.

A long weekend under the banner of jumping excellence with ten teams in the field - Australia, Austria, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, United States of America, Sweden and, of course, Italy - for the Intesa Sanpaolo Nations Cup and the best pairings on the world scene ensuring a spectacle not to be missed in the Rolex Gran Premio Roma, the closing race on Sunday.

In addition to the oval of Piazza di Siena, this year's activity will also take place in the neighbouring Galoppatoio where, under the spotlight, the Roman leg of the Italia Polo Challenge, an itinerant tournament circuit, will be staged at Villa Borghese for the fourth time, while as per tradition it will be the Caroselli del San Raffaele, the Lancieri di Montebello and the 4th Carabinieri Regiment that will close the 2024 edition of the horse competition.
