Letterature Festival Internazionale di Roma - 22nd edition

Five evenings to celebrate great Italian and international literature in a magical and evocative place: after the June preview at the Casa delle Letterature, the Palatine Stadium, inside the Colosseum Archaeological Park, returns to host the historic event of the Roman Summer promoted by the Department of Culture of Roma Capitale and curated by the Istituzione Biblioteche di Roma with the organizational support of Zètema Progetto Cultura.

The program of the 2023 edition is curated by Simona Cives, head of the Casa delle Letterature, with the contribution of a scientific committee made up of prominent protagonists of the literary scene and the artistic coordination of Fabrizio Arcuri. As an homage to Italian writer Italo Calvino, whose birth centenary falls this year, the theme of the 22nd edition is “La memoria del mondo - The Memory of the World”, a contemporary narrative on the origin of the universe that launches us into a multiplicity of visions and futures and poses a reflection on the transmission of knowledge. The Festival's narrative also passes through the image of illustrator Laura Riccioli, with a young woman dressed in a multicolored dress who, from the ruins of the Palatine, almost reaches out to touch the moon, with the lightness and aspiration to the future present in Italo Calvino's idea of the world.

Actor Luigi Lo Cascio, Basque writer, poet and essayist Fernando Aramburu, Japanese-born American writer Julie Otsuka and French writer Jean-Baptiste Del Amo will open the Festival. Protagonists of the second event are writer Margaret Atwood, Paolo Giordano and Mexican writer and essayist Valeria Luiselli. The third evening is dedicated to the winner of the Strega Prize 2023, as well as British writer Jeanette Winterson, Turkish writer Burhan Sönmez and Ukrainian-born German writer and journalist Katja Petrowskaja. Guests on the fourth evening are young Bernardo Zannoni, British poet and editor Sam Riviere and US writer William T. Vollmann. Closing the Festival on the last date are French novelist and academic David Diop, Nicola Lagioia and Ethiopian-born writer Maaza Mengiste.

In a dialogue between different expressive arts, artistic performances by contemporary circus artists and acrobats (Giacomo Costantini/Circus El Grito; Anton Monastyrsky; Valeriya Davydenko; Paolo Locci/Totem Brigade; Barbara Fiorenza and Claudio Ladisa) and live music composed and performed live by Teho Teardo will accompany the reading of unpublished texts during the evenings.

The full program is available at www.culture.roma.it/festivaldelleletterature and on the event's socials. All events are free admission without reservations subject to availability and will be streamed live on the Facebook pages of Biblioteche di Roma and LETTERATURE Festival Internazionale di Roma and on the YouTube channel of Biblioteche di Roma.
