The Requiem Mass by Giuseppe Verdi is staged at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome.
The work, composed in 1874 for choir, solo voices and orchestra, takes place in a period in which Verdi, coming from the great acclaim obtained from Aida, had decided to take a break from the theater scene, while continuing to compose music.
Dedicated to Alessandro Manzoni, the Requiem Mass is inspired by the fundamental themes of spirituality: from the search for faith to the fear of death and what the afterlife holds for us. Spirituality in particular, shines through from the anguished sense that pervades man in front of the mystery of death, in a continuous alternation of leaps towards transcendence on the one hand, and towards a more pessimistic skepticism on the other.
The opera, under the direction of Michele Mariotti, has as main performers the soprano Elena Stikhina, the mezzo-soprano Yulia Matochkina, the tenor Stefan Pop, the bass Giorgi Manoshvili. Orchestra and chorus of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, chorus master Ciro Visco.
