A journey through time in the company of emperors and queens, legionnaires and philosophers, slaves and centurions, gladiators and vestals, guests of a place where time seems to stand still: the film review promoted by CSC - Cineteca Nazionale and Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, two great Italian cultural institutions working here together for the first time, makes us rediscover the irresistible charm of ancient Rome with ten evenings dedicated to the art and imagination of cinema. Hosting the screenings is an extraordinary monument of imperial Rome, the cell overlooking the Colosseum of the Temple of Venus, recently reopened to the public after careful restoration completed in 2021.
Spanning history, classical antiquity and archaeology, ten films of all genres and eras – introduced each evening by ancient history experts, writers, critics and journalists – show us how cinema has confronted the Roman history from 1913 to 2019, in a relationship made up from time to time of fidelity and betrayal, philological attention and free inspiration, seriousness and disengagement. A journey between ancient and contemporary stars, ranging from American colossals to Italian Peplums, from Fellini to Kubrick, also encroaching on comedy, musicals and children’s cinema.
All films are in original version with Italian subtitles; Italian films in original version with English subtitles. Admission is free subject to availability, reservations recommended.
