Vinicio Berti. Antagonista continuo

Vinicio Berti, Quantità antagonista, 1973, Nozzoli

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Rome hosts the exhibition dedicated to the famous Florentine abstractionist for the centenary of his birth.

The unprecedented exhibition concept reconstructs the pictorial evolution of the founder of classical abstractionism, the revolutionary group born in 1950 known for its Manifesto about contemporary art.

On display is a selection of paintings that follow the different thematic and iconographic passages of Berti. He conceived an original style, not letting himself be tempted by the Informal, neo-Dadaism and conceptual during his artistic life.

The sections winds from the first realist-expressionist creations of the early 1940s, where colour is used as a political act, to an unreleased archive and photographic documentation about Berti. The artist's paintings and writings, which highlight his politicized spirit, are displayed among the works of artists of the Gallery, such as Ercole Drei, Arturo Dazzi, Carlo Rivalta, and Amleto Cataldi. They represent an alternative dialogue with those formal and classic styles that the "antagonist" Berti tackled. Furthermore, two landscapes give life to an evocative visual "encounter": one by the young Berti of the early 1940s, the other by Arturo Martini, who influenced the birth of Berti's new art with his archaism and material experiments.
The comics and artist's famous characters are also on display, including Pinocchio. The puppet was a recurring theme of his career, which he repeatedly reinterpreted and depicted in lithographs, sketches and canvases.

Also recovered and recently redigitalized is the art documentary, VINICIO BERTI 70 ANNI DI PITTURA CONTRO (2002), produced by the Vinicio Berti Archive - Florence, the Centro Internazionale Antinoo per l’Arte - Centro Documentazione Marguerite Yourcenar, with the remixing of some important interviews by the artist.

In conjunction with the centenary, a scientific committee composed of prestigious academics, art critics, art historians and artists has been established. The travelling exhibition, curated by Claudio Crescentini and Roberto Sottile, is promoted by Roma Culture, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Rende, Museo del Presente, the Centro Studi d'Arte - Vinicio Berti Archive, the Galleria d 'Arte Nozzoli of Empoli and Roma Centro Mostre .
