The exhibition The nineteenth century at Villa Farnesina. The Duke of Ripalda, Count Giuseppe Primoli and Rome the new Capital of Italy, hosted by the Accademia dei Lincei in its headquarters in Villa Farnesina, curated by Virginia Lapenta and Valeria Petitto, was born following the conference of the Lincei held in 2021, "Villa Farnesina: an example of resilience and enhancement from Rome to today", a title referring to the long history of Villa Farnesina and to the initiatives pursued with the aim, by the Accademia dei Lincei, of preserving and enhancing its extraordinary cultural heritage. In particular, the exhibition aims to highlight the common aspects of two characters, the Duke of Ripalda and Count Primoli. Both the Duke of Ripalda, who arrived in Rome in 1861, and Count Primoli, who returned there in 1871 after being born there, met and frequented each other, finding themselves living with the deep social and urban transformations of the city, which had become in the meanwhile the capital of Italy. The exhibition itinerary accompanies the visitor in the discovery of these two figures starting from their meeting: telling their story highlights their relationship with the changing city, and the photographs taken by Count Primoli in the last years of the nineteenth century become the leitmotif guiding us in the various stages of the journey. The last section of the exhibition on the first floor tells the story of the city "around Villa Farnesina", with an in-depth look at Palazzo Farnese, Palazzo Corsini and, thanks to the collaboration with the Capitoline Superintendency for Cultural Heritage, the events of the Aurelian Walls in the nineteenth century, in particular on the so-called "della Farnesina" section, visible today in the garden of the Villa which constitutes one of the few remains of the wall still preserved on the right bank of the Tiber.
