Carta Coreana - Hanji. L’arte contemporanea incontra un sapere antico

Olivia Magnani, Rimembranze d'ortensie, part.

A new collective that brings together and merges distant universes, Western creativity and Eastern manufacturing art. For the exhibition project developed by the Academy of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Institute, 50 artists were called to work with the Korean Hanji paper, made from the inner bark of mulberry trees and also known as the “thousand years paper” for its great resistance and tightness.

The artists invited to participate, belonging to different generations, were guaranteed maximum creative freedom, with the only request to participate in the manual creation of the paper at the laboratory of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, which is a reference point for restorers, artists and institutions since it is the only one in Europe to have specialized in the production of Korean paper.

The works on display are the result of this experience, thanks to which Hanji paper entered fully into contemporary art research, with paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and multimedia installations. The Italian works interact with the Korean ones; in a special section visitors will find objects and artifacts that tell the multidisciplinary use Koreans make of this paper.
